New Delhi, June 6 (IBNS): Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the schedule of the organisational poll was approved at the party's working committee meeting on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by party president, Sonia Gandhi.
Azad said the present situation in Kashmir was also discussed.
Azad also said that the upcoming election of the President of India was briefly touched upon as a detailed discussion had taken place during the all-party meet organised by Sonia Gandhi, the party chief, sometime ago.
He said that at that meeting it was decided to form a sub-group. The sub-group is expected to meet soon, he said.
The last Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting was held on November and it was chaired by Rahul Gandhi. His mother was absent as she was unwell.
According to reports, the meeting -- chaired by party President Sonia Gandhi -- was held after a gap of seven months, a period during which the party performed much below expectations in a series of Assembly elections.
Sonia Gandhi, who took over the Congress helm in May 1998, is already the longest serving president of the party. Rahul Gandhi took over as Vice President, the number two position, in January 2013.
In her opening speech at the CWC meeting, Sonia Gandhi said, "The Modi government completed three years in office. ... Ironically, whatever success or progress this government has scored has come from programmes and projects that were started by the UPA government."
Talking about the party's recent show, she said, "The recently concluded Assembly elections hold vital lessons for us both in UP and Uttarakhand. With an energised cadre and effective leadership, we were able to defeat a sitting NDA government in Punjab but in Manipur and Goa we failed to convert our winning numbers into forming a government. This outcome reminds us that the BJP will use their enormous resources and muscle power to steal mandates from us... ".
Her entire speech was later tweeted by the party's official website.
The party also tweeted former prime minister Dr Manmohan Sigh's intervention where he gave his observations about the economic situation of the country.
Dr Singh said, "India's economic growth has slowed down sharply, driven primarily by the notebandi announcement of November 2016."
Citing the recently published GVA figures, he said, "The most worrisome aspect of all this is the impact on job creation."
Azad said that the present government has done nothing substantial in the last three years. Minorities, Dalits are not feeling safe and secure in country.
Later, the party vice president, Rahul Gandhi, tweeted through Office of RG, "Discussed vital political issues including crisis in J&K,Govt's mishandling of the economy, Presidential polls as well as INC org elections."
