Mamata urges TMC workers to stay honest, attacks Modi
Kolkata, July 21 (IBNS): Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged all her party workers to remain honest, with people and fight for every inch to take the outfit forward like a people's movement amid cheers from a sea of humanity that converged on Kolkata's Esplanade to observe the annual martyr day on July 21.
She also attacked the Mod government at the centre for putting pressure on the states on various projects while not honouring their own commitments. She also attacked Modi on communal issue and alleged that the BJP was trying to crack down on the Dalits and minorities in their regions like Gujarat.
"21 means rebellion, youth, old, language of soil, mass movement, history, looking back, everything," she said, beginning her speech at the city centre at Esplanade to remember the Congress workers who had died in police firing in 1993.
"We have to earn the trust of the people. Our politics should be how we are perceived by people. TMC is all about people and soil and mothers," she said.
"TMC means change, development and uplift people. I respect the grassroots level workers who stand in booths holding the TMC flags aloft. Our activists fought for their ground without expecting anything," she said.
"I will not allow anything that goes against the people. But we will not tolerate also slander and conspiracies," she said.
"You have to be with people and work always," she said, urging party workers to be disciplined.
She urged all to remain honest and not fall in the trap of greed.

"I do not want anything for me. I do not want to be the PM, I am rather happy in my small hut. I want all to work well," she said.
She urged all to show respect to the seniors, teachers while urging the youth to not worry since she always thinks about them and their betterment.
She even assured the Indians in IT sector working in America and losing job to contact the West Bengal government so that she can help them and honour their talent.
She said the federal structure is being destroyed by the centre and trying to browbeat the states and even choking the funds. "They have stopped 39 schemes," she said.
"We have to maintain law and order and as well be humane,"she said, reminding the gathering on Left Front "atrocities" of the past in Nandigram, Singur, Netai, Mourijhapi and many other places.
"Movement is not about violence but raising awareness," she said.

She said the communal agenda will not be allowed in West Bengal and people cannot be intimidated like the ruling party at the centre is doing.
"Remember, you can be thrown away any time by people," she said warning the Modi government.
Movement of traffic in Kolkata's downtown area came to a halt since Thursday morning, few hours prior to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s martyr day special rally which this year witnessed a record number of attendees following a thumping victory of the party in West Bengal for the second time.
The Kolkata Police have arranged a foolproof security in heart of the city for the massive rally. A large number of CCTV cameras have been installed in the area for live monitoring and drone is being used there for aerial surveillance.
Nearly 2800 policemen, including 200 women cops, along with bomb disposal squad, Quick Response Team (QRT), Radio Flying Squad and Heavy Radio Flying Squad have been deployed.
Seven giant LED screens have been installed there to show the event live. As many as 13 ambulances are there for immediate service in case of any emergency.
Using five routes, several marches are entering the city since morning, which have partly hit the traffic at several places.
Several leaders from opposition parties joined TMC during the rally here.
On July 21 in 1993, as many as 13 activists of Youth Congress were shot dead in Kolkata's Esplanade area during a clash with police. Since the formation of TMC, the party has been commemorating the day as martyr day every year.
