New Delhi/Bengaluru, Sept 27 (IBNS) : In a setback for Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the state Government to release 6,000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery to neighbouring Tamil Nadu for two days, reports said.

The next hearing in the case will be held on Thursday.

Karnataka on Monday had sought time till January  to release more Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu as it needed the depleting source for drinking purposes.

On September 20, the top court had directed Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day till September 27.

Karnataka, however, expressed its inability to release Cauvery water, except for drinking purpose to the neighbouring Tamil Nadu, seeking modification in the court order.

Last week, Karnataka legislature had passed a resolution that the river will be used only for meeting the drinking water needs of villages and towns in the Cauvery Basin and Bengaluru.

As tension has been running high in Karnataka over the issue with violent protests taking place in different areas, prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr P C have been promulgated in Bengaluru and the Cauvery basi area.
