New Delhi, Jul 14 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe various cases of alleged fake encounters in Manipur, reports said.

A two-member bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta asked the central agency to constitute a team to probe into the encounter killings in the insurgency-hit state.

The top court also  decided to monitor the CBI Investigation and asked  the CBI to file a compliance report in January next year.

The apex court was hearing a PIL seeking probe and compensation in alleged extra-judicial killings in Manipur.

The case was filed in the Supreme Court by Extra Judicial Execution Victims Families Association, a registered trust having as its members the wives and mothers of persons whom they claim have been extra-judicially executed by the Manipur Police and the security forces, largely the Assam Rifles and the Army.

The petitioner has alleged 1,528 extra-judicial killings by the Army and other security forces in Manipur from 2000 to 2012 .

Earlier, Gauhati and Manipur High Courts had passed orders for judicial inquiries into the encounter death cases.
