Unrest in Darjeeling hills of West Bengal continues, no relaxation in bandh
Darjeeling/Kolkata, Jun 29 (IBNS): The agitation by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal continues, with supporters allegedly holding violent protests and setting fire to government properties, according to media reports.
The pro-Gorkhaland parties are scheduled to hold an all-party meeting on Thursday, media reported.
With the GJM 'bandh' crippling normal life, there is fear of shortage of food and other essential supplies as well as money in ATMs, reported the media.
The 'bandh' entered into its 16th day on Thursday. According to local media reports, a section of the people want the 'bandh' relaxed for stocking up on essential supplies.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has returned from her official visit to the Netherlands, has been taking stock of the situation since Tuesday.
The government has also requested the Eastern Command to withdraw the army from Darjeeling, according to media reports.
The state home department has also asked the CID to investigate into the June 17 violence in the Singmari area when three people were killed and more than 30 police personnel injured, media reported.
