West Bengal government to set up cyber crime security of excellence
Kolkata, July 21 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced that her government is set to establish a cyber security centre of excellence to fight cyber crimes effectively.
In her Facebook page, the West Bengal CM wrote, "I am happy to share with all of you that today State Government has decided to establish West Bengal Cyber Security Centre of Excellence (WBCS-CoE) to deal with increasing cyber-offences in the State.
It will be an apex body for dealing with all cyber-security related issues including creating awareness among common people on threats associated with it.
"We have also decided to introduce courses on ‘Data Science’ and ‘Cyber-Security’ in different colleges in the state, to increase employability of students in this emerging area," she said.
Experts have opined that a chunk of these crimes get overlooked and remain unsolved due to the lack of expertise. They have also called for more stringent laws.
"Indian cyber laws are absolutely rudimentary and we are still in the stone age," said Sudipta Basu, a Delhi based advocate and cyber law expert.
Basu told IBNS: "Cyber crime conviction rate in India is the lowest. Government need to educate the law enforcing agencies against cyber crime."
"Under the existing IP laws, most offences are bailable, so half the time you get away doing something wrong. We need more fast track courts dedicated to the cyber crime, because the number of white-collar crime is increasing. We also need judges who have moved from IT backgrounds to deliver proper verdict. Revamping of the whole model in India is needed," Basu added.
